Island Magic

After the dispointment of Oran Park, Glen was keen to show what the improved Cortina was capable of at his favourite Australian track.

Qualifing:

Out pacing the current national champion, Dean Randle, in the early part of the session, Glen had the Cortina flying. His amazing lap of 1.35.8 was on the very limit of what the car was capable of. Later, in his Saab, Dean took pole position, with Glen less than 1 second behind in 2nd place.

Race 1:

Starting on the front row, Glen made a great start and led down into turn 1. This was short lived however, as an inexpereinced "P-Plater", starting on the second row, pushed the cortina around, broadside to the on coming traffic, the same car hit the front of the cortina snapping the steering wheel from Glen's hand and fracturing his thumb. With panel damage, bent steering, destroyed tyre and a buckled wheel, Glen limped back tot he pits.

Race 2:

After a pain killing injection, several tablets and some strapping, Glen's thumb was good enough to drive. Mark, Joe and Charlie had repaired the car, but were forced to use our very old tyres as the race tyres were destroyed in the crash.

Starting last, a good start saw Glen make several spots up early, but it was obvious the tyres were not up to the task. Glen manhandled the car for the entire 10 laps, fighting chronic understeer the whole way. Glen managed to get to 3rd by the end of the race. A good result considering the circumstances. 3rd place was good enough to earn the team their first podium, and first trophey of the year.

Australian Sports Sedan Championship - Final Points Score

The Simons Builders / Gypsum Australia Ford Cortina has finished in 5th place in the Australian Sports Sedan Championship after a dismal final round at Oran Park, NSW.

The Cortina was dogged by a lack of power all weekend. A problem, that started out quite small, but by the end of the weekend was so bad that it could not be raced. Charlie (the teams engine builder) worked tirelessly to find the source for the problem, but to no avail.

Once back to Melbourne the problem was sourced back to blocked fuel injectors. The fuel suplied to the team had contained a bled of ethanol and regular racing fuel. The ethanol had eaten some of the adhesive within the fuel bladder and the resulting gel bypassed the 2 in-line filters and clogged up the ultra fine injectors.

A dispointing end to a fine season.

Final Points

1. Dean Randle - 227pts
2. Tony Ricciardello - 195pts
3. Daniel Tamasi - 168pts
4. Stephen Voight - 110pts
5. Glen Hastings - 97pts
6. Charlie Senese - 89pts
7. Kerry Baily - 84pts

Ride to the Mountain - Stage One .

The Ride to the Mountain team commenced their ride to Mount Panorama, Bathurst in aid of the Make A Wish Foundation today. Following the speeches and media formalities in sunny but cool conditions, Glen and the team hit the road with a police escort.

Glen has reported that with the first days pace being slightly slower than expected, he completed the 140 kms without any trouble. The team had fine riding weather all the way to Seymour, where 2 minutes after arriving at Neil Beer Holden for a public appearance and sausage sizzle with 50 guests, it started pelting with rain.

At time of writing Glen reported that the cold weather had set in and that it was around 4 degrees. The team is hoping to have fine weather again tomorrow, but with a little more sun.

Glen and the team hit the road again at 9.30 AM for the short 80 Km trip to the Victorian provincial town of Shepparton. Once the team arrive at approximately 2.00 PM, they will be making an appearance at Repco, with Cameron McConville and Andrew Jones doing an autograph session.
